POWELL RIVER-THE PEARL OF THE SUNSHINE COAST
Powell River is a city set within a captivating seaside location. It is known as “the pearl of the Sunshine Coast”; and it is no wonder, with its picturesque landscapes, and striking sunsets. Powell River is located on the northern Sunshine Coast of southwestern British Columbia. The District of Powell River includes the following communities: Saltery Bay, Stillwater, Westview, Cranberry, Townsite, Wildwood, Sliammon, Lund, and Texada Island. It has a population of approximately 16,689 people (Statistics Canada 2011).
Powell River is a year-round, sea-to-mountain playground for all ages. A place where Canoeists and Kayakers can enjoy an experience of a lifetime on the famous Sunshine Coast Trial & Powell River Forest Canoe Route (an 80 km/50 mi camping circuit involving eight pristine lakes). ATV enthusiasts can join the local Powell River ATV Club, and explore the wondrous backwoods of the community. There are numerous campsites, including forestry campsites that are free of charge. Inland Lake Provincial Park is an amazing campsite with a wheelchair-friendly trail that surrounds the entire lake. Powell River is a world-renowned place for scuba divers, with over 100 dive sites, including the world’s finest 3 metre bronze mermaid, located 30 metres under water at Saltery Bay Provincial Park. Powell River has a first class Recreation Centre, Curling Rink, and an 18-hole Championship Golf Course. World class rock climbing, great snow shoeing, and awesome hiking are all part of the outdoor smorgasbord of activity Powell River has to offer. The city is blessed with over 60 km/37 mi of sheltered coastline which abound with beautiful bays, coves, and inlets. Some of the favourite beaches one can discover are Palm Beach, Mahood Beach, Donkersley Beach, Willingdon Beach (located right in town, and includes a campsite and playground with a fun water park), and Gibson’s Beach. If you prefer to swim in fresh water, there are over 40 lakes found in the area. Fairly new to the area is a beautiful sea walk. Totem poles are found placed in the Sea Walk. They can be viewed as you enter Westview on the water front. They display an ancestral depiction of Salish Art.
Powell River is known for its vibrant cultural life, including major arts festivals like International Choral Kathaumixw, which hosts choirs from around the world, and Symphony Orchestra of the Pacific. The Max Cameron Theatre is a new performing arts facility equipped with state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and projection capabilities.
All this, combined with the warmth and friendliness of the people who reside here, make visitors want to stay for good. Powell River is truly, an amazing place to live!
